Nominating Statement:

Please accept this nomination for Cheryl Reynolds for the Clinical Faculty Award 2022. Cheryl has been a PTA clinician for 38 years and a CI for 30. She has worked with over 12 of our PTA students throughout the years. Cheryl has consistently enhanced the quality of clinical education for Berkshire Community College PTA students by providing meaningful and challenging clinical experiences, adapting to the specific learning needs and level of each student. She has guided students at each level of clinical education and excels in matching the expected performance to the individual student--meeting the student where they are at and providing a progression towards success. She is clear with feedback and provides time and opportunity for student problem-solving. For example, Cheryl excels at creating a comfortable environment for the shy or unsure student, while still providing the expected challenge. For the exceptional student who may be advanced clinically, Cheryl is able to challenge them as well. This fall, Clin Ed II, Cheryl provided opportunity for the student to share related professional expertise as a Pilates Instructor as a presentation to the clinical staff. This is a great example of what students may bring with them.

Nominating Statement:

Connie Jansen is nominated for Clinical Faculty Award for 2021. BCC and Noble Hospital have had a clinical agreement since 2014 and Connie has been a Physical Therapist clinician, Clinical Instructor, and the Center Coordinator of Clinical Education the entire time. Connie has consistently accepted placement for BCC PTA students and has directly worked with our students as a CI. She has always been an advocate for students, providing learning experiences that are challenging, providing opportunity for growth as a developing PTA student, whether first or final rotation. During the summer of 2020, student placement was exceptionally challenging due to the restrictions from Covid-19 pandemic. Facilities were cancelling their student programs, and cancelling clinical rotations. Noble Hospital was able to maintain their student program and Connie met the need of providing additional clinical placements, so that students from Springfield Technical College and Berkshire Community College could continue on track with clinical education. For the BCC PTA student Connie accepted, Connie took on the added responsibility of CI. As CCCE, Connie coordinates clinical rotations for other disciplines than PTA. Synchronizing placements for multiple students of different disciplines requires balance—balance of clinician schedules and specific clinical rotation durations. It takes a special person with commitment to investing in PTA student education. Connie is such a person.

Nominating Statement:

Jamie has been a longstanding CI for BCC students and is well-deserving of recognition for her commitment, ingenuity and clinical instruction. Jamie creates dynamic learning experiences by balancing challenge, encouragement, and clear learning expectations. This summer, 2020, Jamie accepted a student for clinical education I placement. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the PTA student was required to participate remotely. Jamie, provided learning opportunities that exceeded clinical expectations. She made the most of developing critical thinking and clinically-based treatments/activities for this student. The activities included developing goal-based treatments specific for the specific student; developing ROM program and teaching to staff remotely; developing appropriate developmental games. Jamie included discussions after sessions, which challenged the student to critically think and apply rationale. Jamie organized all of this with a short lead-in time. Though a very atypical learning experience, Jamie provided a highly organized and focused clinical learning environment.

Over the past few years, she has provided foundational and entry level experiences for our students, meeting each student where they are and then challenging them. Students have reported that one of the benefits of working with Jessica is the increase in confidence they developed with a variety of medical and cognitive patient populations in the skilled nursing/rehabilitation setting. That she challenged them enough outside of their comfort zone and that they always felt supported. In addition to student presentations, Jessica develops activities/projects for students to expand knowledge in evidence-based practice.

Nominating Statement:

Some things about Kim that have made a difference to me are that she helped me feel comfortable with children with special needs right away, showing me exactly what to do and then having me take over while observing from a comfortable distance, giving me freedom while still helping me whenever I had a question or needed it. She also helped me through some difficult situations with children, sicknesses/illnesses the children experiences while we were in the classroom. She made me have a lot of confidence I did not have before this clinical, that I really did know what I was doing and was prepared for this clinical experience. In the school setting there is a lot of unpredictability and dealing with the unavoidable potentially stressful situations. Both from other adults or teachers and the children/students. Student health is so fragile that things can change at any moment. Kim showed me how she handles these difficult situations and was a great role model on how I could approach a similar situation.

Tessa was a very wonderful clinical instructor when it came to my first clinical. She was able to answer all my questions, no matter how many times I repeated the same one. She also explained everything while doing something and why she was doing it before having me perform myself, and she would always let me practice on her when I felt I was no ready to work on a patient yet. Tessa would give me feedback with everything when it came to my notes, how I’m doing something and why I needed to fix it, and so much more. She was very patient with me and understanding. Tessa deserves the recognition because this was her first time being a clinical instructor, however if I was never told that I would have guessed she has been teaching students many times before me. She knows what she is doing when it comes to being a PTA and it shows immensely. I appreciate everything she has taught me and I wish everyone can get this experience with Tessa because she does an amazing job when it comes to teaching future PT Assistants. Thank you Tessa, I will take all you tricks and wisdom along with me on my future endeavors.

During my clinical experience Jenn won teacher of the year for the West Warwick school system, it was really nice to see her receive this award. She is highly respected and valued in West Warwick. Everyone I have met has had nothing but kind words to say about her. I admire her work ethic, the level of respect she has earned and her overall dedication to the school and children she works with. Norm has been a CI for the CCRI PTA program for over 20yrs. He builds confidence in students through constructive feedback and an unfailing positive attitude. This combined with his high standards and dedication to clinical teaching promote the development of successful and skilled PTA students. This statement was written by a CCRI PTA students in 2017: From day one Norm welcomed me and made it clear that he was ready to make sure that I had the most educational experience possible. He went out of his way to insure that I was exposed to a wide variety of patients, diagnoses, and interventions. Not only was Norm committed to making my experience great but he was also extremely patient with me (especially since it was my first clinical) and really took time to thoroughly answer all my questions. Being out on clinical for the first time, I was very nervous, but also relishing this experience that was so different from classroom/lab instruction. Seeing real patients with real limitations and real dysfunction was very eye opening. Norm was there to guide me in more than just textbook protocols. From him I learned a tremendous amount about the psychology of providing a physical therapy treatment. You can know all of your interventions by the book, but if you can't put the patient at ease, or at times distract them, or make them laugh, it could jeopardize the treatment. I watched him bring people to tears, but by the end they were patting him on the back and thanking him. You can't learn that from a textbook or in the classroom. Another area that I felt like he excelled in was body mechanics. At first I was worried that it would be hard for me to learn by watching him. At about double my weight and almost a foot taller, Norm is a much bigger person than I am. In many cases what worked for him was absolutely not going to work for me. Despite this, he always had suggestions on how I could position myself for better leverage in order to achieve the same result. Finally, I want to praise Norm for his excellent communication skills. He was always very clear with what he expected of me. As I acclimated to the clinic and his expectations grew, there was a very open line of communication that made me feel very confident. He gave great constructive criticism that enabled me to hone in on exactly what I needed to improve upon, and also suggestions on how I could progress. To wrap up - I feel incredibly lucky to have been placed with Norm for my first clinical. He is a wealth of information and clearly he enjoys sharing it. I left there so much more knowledgeable and skilled than when I walked in, and I know I put in a lot of hard work, but I would have never learned as much as I did had I not had such an incredible teacher.

Jen has served as CI to multiple CCRI students.

Submitted on: 2017-12-28

Nominating Statement:

This is written in support of Jennifer Wentworth as a nominee for the Clinical Faculty Award offered through the New England PTA Consortium. Jen routinely accepts one PTA student annually. She works in a public school system and is the only PT on staff. Despite the lack of coworkers, Jen demonstrates an incredible level of commitment to innovation and professional growth for herself and her students. She has worked with the high school students to build standers for elementary and middle students who did not fit into traditional standers. As a CI, she encouraged SPTAs to identify recommendations for modifications and use of the devices. Jen learned about the TAAP program (Treadmill for Students with Autism and Apraxia) and piloted it with students in one elementary school. This required the buy-in of the principal, teachers and classroom aides. She secured a grant to fund the purchase of a treadmill, designed space in a small room to implement the program and instructed classroom aides in support of this program. School personnel reported significant improvements in the students’ classroom performance when using this program. The outcome of Jen’s work has been a success story for students and school personnel. PTA students benefited from cooperation across the school environment and the success of these innovations. For many years, Jen has taken CCRI students from a variety of backgrounds. The uniform response of the students has been, “This is the best affiliation that I have been on! Jen is amazing!” Jen provides appropriate challenge and support and ensures that CCRI graduates are ready for employment in the public school setting. She is flexible and has accommodated unexpected student illnesses without sacrificing the quality of the experience. She is incredibly approachable; the students feel comfortable working under her tutelage. Students truly “blossom” on affiliation with Jen; she consistently pushes students to perform at their best and avoid complacency. I am especially impressed by her innovation regarding the student program. Every year, when I do the student visits, she has something new to share. The CCRI students benefit so much from seeing her as a role model in the profession. Jen encourages students to develop resources for parents and/or school personnel. She completes a needs analysis and students create their projects based upon an identified need and their specific interests. This may include a pamphlet for parent education on orthotics, or recommendations to parents on using the Wi for visual motor development at home. She listens to the students, and fosters growth in their specific areas. I look forward to the midterm site visit, as I know the student will be doing something challenging and unusual. As a PTA program, we are incredibly fortunate to have a clinical instructor like Jennifer Wentworth. I can’t think of another CI who is so well respected, appreciated and genuinely liked by the students. I appreciate your consideration of Jennifer Wentworth for the Clinical Faculty Award; she has earned this award.

Since graduation and her employment at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Kim has always given back to the program by being a clinical instructor every year for our clinical 2 placements. Larry Scafuri is the true definition of a great PTA and instructor. Immediately, Larry set the tone for the clinical experience and what is expected of me as the student. He went above and beyond to continue to educate me during my time at New England Orthopedic Surgeons of Springfield. When we were not working with patients, Larry acted as a patient and instructed me in many techniques and procedures, or he was demonstrating with learning models they have at the facility. There was always an open line of communication on how I was performing throughout the rotation. I had the opportunity to meet several surgeons and sit in on multiple surgeries. Larry always carried himself in a professional manner and provided exceptional care to his patients. He set the tone for who I would like to be as an acting clinician. It is my pleasure to nominate Larry Scafuri for the New England Physical Therapist Assistant Consortium Clinical Facility Award.

Submitted on: 2021-05-19

Nominating Statement:

Sonja Hall is a PTA who did an excellent job of teaching me how to be more independent in my treatment of patients. Sonja is great at teaching students because of her excellent communication skills. She will go over the patient's chart with you before you see the patient, and once the treatment is over she gives detailed feedback about your treatment performance and is more than willing to answer any question you might have. Sonja also strives to make use of any extra time we might have during the day to enhance the learning experience. We have gone over topics such as shoulder ROM and massage, knee ROM and massage, MET techniques for pelvic obliquities, and other techniques that we might have for different patients. Sonja also expresses a lot of confidence and knowledge of her profession. She is very knowledgeable with the precautions, pathology, and appropriate exercises for every patient I have seen her treat. She is very flexible in patient treatment and meeting their needs and changing the treatment session to further facilitate their needs while staying in the plan of care. She has also shown to be very friendly with the patients and many patients who came to the clinic wanted to work with her specifically. What personally facilitated the best learning from me, was the constant feedback that she gave to me during the first couple of weeks, then after the third week, she gradually gave me more independence. I cannot stress enough how this helped me grow as a PTA student, ever since my clinical with Sonja my confidence with treating patients has gotten much better. I can now make my own treatment plans, I am much more flexible with my treatment plans, I have tons more confidence, I am much more independent, and also I feel like I have learned a lot from the feedback she gave me and I have incorporated it into my treatment sessions. In conclusion, I think Sonja has done a great job of showing me what a PTA should look like and what I should aspire for.

Bio:

Sonja Hall is a PTA who has volunteered her time to take several students from UMPI over the last several years. Each time, her students have come back to the classroom with an incredible boost in confidence and brag to their classmates about the exemplary model behaviors she demonstrates in her patient care. Sonja always goes above and beyond with each student, taking the time to meet them where they are at academically and professionally, and progressing them to become the best clinicians they can. She has a true passion for teaching, and clearly enjoys what she does. She always makes herself available to the students, whether it be downtime or after hours. A recent student of hers submitted her for this award, as they felt she deserves special recognition for the incredible learning experience she provides. It is an honor to nominate Sonja for this award, and we look forward to continued collaboration with her to provide the most excellent clinical education experience.

I also witnesses him letting other future PTA student job shadow him, so they could further advance their knowledge of the field as well. While I was there, he went to a continuing education course on the shoulder and shared some great information with me and the staff. Dana Boardman is a 2015 graduate of the PTA program at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. A non traditional student, he decided to go back to school in his early 40s and change career paths. He wanted to get into a profession where he could continue to grow and learn while helping people with physical impairments. He thought the PTA program was the perfect fit for himself and his family. Once, I graduated I was fortunate to be hired by Northern Light Hospital-A R Gould where he began his career as an inpatient PTA. From there, he was introduced to the outpatient world of physical therapy and skilled nursing. Today, he works a mix of all three settings which gives him a variety of patients to work with. Dana loves people which he says makes his job easy. He also states it is very rewarding to see the progress individuals make with the care that they are provided.

Nominating Statement:

Amanda was one of my CIs. From the first day I walked into the hospital she was extremely welcoming. I felt comfortable with her right away. Amanda was very supportive throughout the entire clinical which made my experience very well rounded and informative. The knowledge I gained from not only her but the entire crew at WCGH was more than I could have ever imagined. Being at this facility really solidified my choice to become a PTA. From the very start Amanda had me involved in all aspects of the hospital. I was in observing surgeries and pediatrics. My favorite thing I got to do with Amanda was LSVT BIG. Amanda is certified and see many patients wit Parkinsons disease. her huge heart and comforting personality makes her a wonderful LSVT BIG instructor. she goes above and beyond and runs a monthly wellness program for previous BIG graduates from WCGH. You can tell by watching the BIG graduates faces that they really admire Amanda for what she does for them. Watching Amanda run the Swing bed rehab department helped me to see the importance of organization and how its essential to make the program run smooth. She was always on top of things and worked very hard to make sure everyone was happy, staff and patients. Amanda attended a recent Clinical Instructor course to make herself a better CI. Continuing education to be better for future students is an admirable thing. Her passion for what she does is so evident in everything she does. I will always remember my clinical experience at WCGH because of Amanda and all of the other wonderful staff there.

Kim has gone above and beyond for me to make my clinical the best experience that it could be. She would change her day completely around so that we could have more treatments for me to get a better experience ie more hands on. She continued to give me tips and advice that she had learned over the years without hesitation or me asking. Kim was very welcoming and encouraged me throughout my entire clinical, helping me build more confidence in myself as she knew I had the potential and knowledge. I just needed to come out of my shell. Kim never doubted my, gave feedback and listened to my ideas and used them. We worked as a team and she treated my more as a co worker than a student. We both learned from one another and used each other's weaknesses to become better therapists. She took the time and made sure I got to see and got the most out of this clinical.

She broke down tasks and worked with him on off days to review treatment techniques and to fill the student with confidence and positive reassurance.
